The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has expressed confidence that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta will return to Ghana to face ongoing investigations, as efforts intensify to secure his extradition from the United States.
Speaking on the matter, Mr. Ayine disclosed that Ghanaian authorities are working closely with the United States Department of Justice to advance the extradition process, stressing that the case has moved beyond speculation into active international legal cooperation.
“The U.S. Justice Department is fully engaged, and processes are underway,” the Attorney-General said, adding that government remains optimistic about a successful outcome.
His comments come against the backdrop of heightened public scrutiny over accountability in high-profile financial matters, particularly following recent assurances by government that no individual is above the law. The Attorney-General reiterated that Ghana’s pursuit of the former minister is rooted in due process and respect for international legal frameworks.
“This is not about persecution. It is about accountability and ensuring that persons of interest respond to lawful processes,” he noted.
Mr. Ayine further emphasized that the government’s actions align with broader efforts to strengthen confidence in Ghana’s justice system, especially at a time when the state is seeking to restore credibility in public financial management.
“We are determined to demonstrate that Ghana’s legal institutions are capable of pursuing justice, regardless of status or location,” he said.
The Attorney-General assured the public that updates would be provided as engagements with U.S. authority’s progress, while urging calm as the legal processes take their course.
