The Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA) has threatened a nationwide shutdown of waste management services beginning November 7, 2025, over government’s failure to release funds owed to service providers.
Speaking to journalists in Accra, the Executive Secretary of ESPA, Mrs. Ama Ofori Antwi, said the Association’s members have reached a breaking point as long-standing arrears continue to cripple their operations.
“We call on the government to, as a matter of urgency, make payments to avoid a shutdown by November 7, 2025,” she said.
“We therefore appeal to the government for the immediate release of our funding payments owed to all waste management contractors by November 7, 2025. Without this intervention, service providers may be forced to suspend operations nationwide.”
According to ESPA, the non-payment of arrears has left several companies struggling to sustain essential sanitation services across the country.
Mrs. Ofori Antwi warned that the sector faces an imminent collapse if the government does not act swiftly.
“ESPA regrets to caution that several landfills and treatment facilities across the country may face imminent shutdown. Such closures would disrupt waste collection services, threaten thousands of jobs, lead to public health crises, and reverse Ghana’s hard-won progress in the sanitation sector and environmental protection.”
The Association says waste contractors have continued operating despite severe financial constraints, but many are no longer able to bear the burden.
ESPA maintains that it remains open to dialogue but insists that timely settlement of arrears is critical to preventing nationwide sanitation disruption.
