The German Ambassador to Ghana, Frederik Landshöft, has reaffirmed his country’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s climate action efforts, stressing that sustainable cocoa production can lead to fairer prices and better livelihoods for farmers.
The ambassador made the remarks at the Climate Talk Series, organized by the German Embassy in partnership with Joy News, and hosted at FairAfric in Suhum.
The series provides a platform for critical conversations linking Ghana’s climate ambitions with practical solutions.
Speaking on the central theme of the discussion, Mr. Landshöft noted that while cocoa is the backbone of Ghana’s economy, its production generates large amounts of waste that often go unused.
He emphasized that this waste can be transformed into opportunities for farmers, noting “This is both a challenge and an opportunity. With better energy efficiency and waste-to-energy innovations, factories can lower costs, reduce emissions, and gain access to markets that increasingly demand sustainable products,” he said.
The ambassador highlighted that Germany has made climate protection the backbone of its international engagement, pointing to existing collaborations with Ghana in renewable energy, green jobs, and sustainable industries.
Mr. Landshöft further stressed the importance of strong collaboration between the public and private sectors to drive innovation in Ghana’s cocoa sector.
“The public sector alone cannot deliver. The private sector must be at the forefront, bringing innovation, capital, and technology. If companies take the lead in implementing NDC goals, they can transform Ghana’s transition into a driver of competitiveness, resilience, and prosperity,” he explained.
He added that focusing on green cocoa processing is timely, as it can position Ghana as a global leader in sustainable cocoa production and waste management.
The Joy News Climate Talk Series, through forums like this, continues to provide a space for policymakers, businesses, and innovators to exchange ideas on pressing environmental challenges.
This edition explored how energy efficiency, waste management, and innovative cocoa processing can help secure Ghana’s place in the global sustainable production chain.
