Paddy Barrett Thriving in Shelbourne’s Historic European Campaign
As mid-August arrives, European qualification is entering its decisive stage. For some clubs, dreams will end this week, while others will secure a coveted group stage place as the evenings grow shorter. For Shelbourne, the month will continue with at least three more games—but in which competition remains to be seen.
ICYMI: Can Tolka Park’s Electric Atmosphere Propel Shels to Victory?
A Crucial Night at Tolka Park
Tonight, Joey O’Brien’s side face Croatian champions Rijeka in the Europa League third qualifying round, kicking off at 7.45pm at Tolka Park. Shels hold a 2-1 advantage from the first leg. Victory would set up a play-off clash with either Greek giants PAOK or Austrian side Wolfsberger. Should they fall short, a Conference League play-off could await, potentially against Linfield—if the Belfast side overturns a 2-1 deficit to Faroese outfit Víkingur.
Experience from European Nights Past
Defender Paddy Barrett knows this stage well. He was part of Dundalk’s famous 2016 Europa League campaign, when they stunned BATE Borisov in the Champions League qualifiers with a 3-1 win in Tallaght. That victory set up a tie with Legia Warsaw, whose home leg was played at the Aviva Stadium. Reflecting on that run, Barrett recalled the 1-0 away loss to BATE as “the best defeat” of his career, one that gave the squad belief they could win back home.
A Chance to Lead on the Big Stage
Now 32, Barrett says the chance to help Shelbourne reach the group stages would be an even greater personal achievement. “I’m more of a leader and a mature player now,” he said. “I want to recreate those memories with Shelbourne. Opportunities like this don’t come often—it’s life-changing to play against top-quality opposition in Europe.”
Respect for the Opposition
Rijeka will be bolstered by the return of talented forward Toni Fruk, and Barrett knows concentration will be key. “If you switch off for even a second, you’ll be punished,” he warned. “Their speed, sharpness, and creativity are on another level compared to our league. But we’ve worked on our game plan this week, and we’ll take the fight to them.”
