Bundee Aki says he has a newborn child who he hasn’t met yet. After eight intense weeks on the road with the British and Irish Lions, the squad is now parting ways. A Surprising Birth on Game Day
At 35 years old, Aki just became a father for the fifth time. His wife, Kayla, gave birth to their baby girl, Aine, two weeks ago—just hours before Aki played in the first Test against the Wallabies in Brisbane. Until now, he had kept the news private. With the series wrapped up following a 22-12 loss to Australia, he finally shared the touching story. He recalled being in the hotel when Kayla called, saying she was having contractions. A few moments later, her water broke during the drive to the hospital, which was still 30–40 minutes away. Not long after, she video-called him—from the car—with their newborn already in her arms. Aki was in disbelief: “She had it in the car on the way to the hospital.”
No Time to Pause, Even for Joy
Despite the emotional whirlwind, Aki had no thoughts of skipping the match. He believed the birth brought good energy—”good Juju” as he called it. He joined the game in the second half and helped the Lions secure a 27-19 win. Aki also shared the meaning behind his daughter’s name, Aine, noting that all his children’s names start with the letter “A”—Armani, Adrianna, Andronicus, Ailbhe, and now Aine.
Appreciation for His Wife’s Strength
Like his teammate Andrew Porter, who also became a new father during the tour, Aki admitted the separation has been harder for his wife than for him. “Credit to my wife. She’s a powerful woman, a strong woman,” he said, thankful that both mother and baby are healthy.
Lions Experience Among His Career Highlights
Although disappointed by his personal performance in the final match, Aki says this Lions series win is one of his proudest career moments. He praised coach Andy Farrell for creating a supportive and relaxed environment for players and staff alike. “You only wish you could be in that group of people. It’s been unbelievable,” Aki shared. With two tours and now a series win under his belt, Aki leaves this chapter feeling deeply fulfilled.
