Daniel Wiffen, from Armagh, had been hoping to defend his men’s 800m freestyle title at the World Aquatics Championships. Despite still recovering from appendicitis, he managed to reach the final but finished in eighth place, clearly not at full fitness. He had been scheduled to swim in the 1500m freestyle later in the week, but his condition has ruled him out.

Swim Ireland confirmed the decision, stating: “Unfortunately, Daniel Wiffen has had to withdraw, on medical grounds and due to the ongoing effects of appendicitis he dealt with in June, from the remainder of competition at the World Aquatics.” The statement highlights the difficult call made by medical staff and team management to protect Wiffen’s long-term health.
Daniel Reflects on the 800m Final
After the race, Wiffen shared his thoughts, expressing both disappointment and a sense of pride. “I know last time I spoke, I didn’t think I was going to make the final, but we got in there, we got eighth place, last in the final,” he said. “Obviously, not my best showing, from last year winning the Olympics to coming eighth in the final. But honestly, I’m happy to be in the final, still progressing.”
Staying Positive Through the Pain
Wiffen described the physical challenges he faced during the race. He recalled feeling strong at the start and even leading at one point. However, by the 400m mark, the pain in his stomach intensified, making it difficult to finish at his usual level. Still, he remained positive, saying it was all part of the sport and an experience to grow from.
