Could Postecoglou Be Out at Spurs?
Things aren’t looking great for Ange Postecoglou in his second season with Tottenham Hotspur. The team took their 15th Premier League loss over the weekend, and people are wondering if he’ll stay with the club. Even though he seemed to bring some stability by getting Spurs to the Europa League quarter-finals, a recent 2-0 loss to Fulham has put his job in doubt again. Postecoglou’s Potential Replacements at Spurs.
Word on the street (aka The Telegraph) is that Spurs are already looking at possible replacements. Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola and Fulham’s Marco Silva are said to be top contenders. Both coaches have made a splash with their teams this season and could take over if Tottenham decides to switch managers.
Is This Spurs’ Worst Season Ever?
Tottenham’s struggles this season have them sitting at 14th in the Premier League, making it one of their worst seasons in years. Since it’s looking tough for them to qualify for European competitions, the club is thinking about what to do next.
Iraola, who has Bournemouth fighting for a spot in European football, has a contract until 2026. They’re expected to talk about extending his contract soon, but an offer from Spurs might make him jump ship. Silva, on the other hand, is under contract with Fulham until the end of next season. He reportedly has a £6 million (AU$12m) release clause, which would make him an easy target for Tottenham.
But, The Telegraph says that Spurs aren’t planning to fire anyone right away. Even if Tottenham doesn’t make it past the Europa League quarter-finals, Postecoglou’s job is probably safe. Postecoglou’s Potential Replacements at Spurs.
Postecoglou Responds to the Rumors
Postecoglou is used to hearing rumors about his job and recently commented on all the talk. He told reporters that he thinks the scrutiny is way over the top.
“There’s always talk, and there are two sides to it: some people really looking at what I do, and others who just love a story about a manager who might be fired,” Postecoglou said. Postecoglou’s Potential Replacements at Spurs.
He’s annoyed by all the criticism managers face, especially from people who haven’t been in the hot seat themselves.
“People claim I don’t have a backup plan, that I’m stubborn, or that my strategies don’t pan out. Some of these critics weren’t even alive when I started coaching,” he said, mentioning that he’s been a manager since 1996/97.
Even with the pressure building, Postecoglou isn’t worried and says his career will be fine no matter what happens at Tottenham.
“I get it, but I don’t need to react. It doesn’t change who I am, what I believe, or how I do things. My career will keep going, no matter what,” he added.
What’s Next for Spurs?
Tottenham will try to get back on track after the international break when they play Chelsea away on April 4. Then, less than 72 hours later, they’re hosting Southampton in a big home game. These games could be key in deciding how their season goes—and maybe Postecoglou’s future with the club.
