Thousands of flood victims across affected communities are set to benefit from a GHS300 million emergency intervention approved by President John Dramani Mahama to support relief operations and long-term flood mitigation efforts.
The funding, which will be drawn from the Contingency Fund, follows widespread flooding triggered by hours of heavy rainfall in parts of Accra and other communities in southern Ghana.
According to the Presidency, the intervention is intended to provide immediate assistance to affected residents while strengthening measures to reduce the impact of future flooding.
GHS150 Million for Emergency Relief
A statement signed by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, announced that GHS150 million has been allocated for immediate humanitarian assistance.
The funds will support relief operations for individuals and communities affected by the floods, including the provision of essential supplies and emergency assistance.
Government says the allocation is aimed at helping victims recover from the immediate effects of the disaster.
Additional Funding for Flood Mitigation
The remaining GHS150 million has been earmarked for flood mitigation projects designed to minimise future flood risks.
According to the Presidency, the investment will support long-term interventions intended to improve drainage systems, strengthen resilience and reduce the vulnerability of flood-prone communities.
Officials believe the dual approach of emergency relief and preventive action will improve Ghana’s disaster response capacity.
Security Agencies Deployed
President Mahama has also directed the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service to support the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other emergency agencies in ongoing rescue and relief operations.

The deployment is expected to enhance emergency response efforts and speed up assistance to affected communities.
President Assesses Damage
Earlier on Monday, President Mahama undertook an aerial inspection of some of the worst-hit areas to assess the scale of the destruction and coordinate government’s emergency response.
The visit formed part of efforts to ensure relief interventions are directed to communities most severely affected by the flooding.
Government Reaffirms Commitment
The Presidency has assured the public that government remains committed to protecting lives, supporting affected families and implementing measures to reduce the impact of future flooding.
Officials say the emergency package demonstrates government’s determination to respond swiftly to natural disasters while investing in long-term solutions to strengthen flood resilience nationwide.
