Ken Ofori-Atta drags National Security Operatives to court over “unauthorized” home raid

Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has filed a lawsuit against two police officers and National Security operatives over an alleged illegal raid on his private residence in Cantonments, Accra.

The suit, filed at the High Court, accuses DSP Bismark Boakye Ansah and Chief Inspector Mensah, along with a team of unidentified military and plainclothes personnel, of unlawfully entering his home on February 11, 2025, while he was abroad for medical treatment.

According to the court documents, the heavily armed team—consisting of 12 individuals, including five in military uniforms, one police officer, and others in plain clothes—entered the premises without presenting a search warrant or offering any explanation to Ofori-Atta’s domestic staff.

The former minister says the operatives rummaged through private areas of his home, including bedrooms, kitchen, and closets, filming the exercise on a mobile device and warning staff not to use their phones.

The plaintiff claims the intrusion has had severe emotional and reputational consequences. His domestic staff, he says, were left traumatized, while the raid itself—widely reported both locally and internationally—has damaged his global reputation and portrayed him as a criminal.

“Despite attempts to obtain clarity from the National Intelligence Bureau, the Chief of Defence Staff, and the IGP, no justification or explanation has been provided for the operation,” the suit states.

Ofori-Atta is seeking multiple legal remedies, including:

  • A declaration that the defendants’ actions were unlawful
  • Damages for trespass and breach of privacy
  • A perpetual injunction to prevent further interference
  • Aggravated damages and costs

The defendants have been ordered to respond to the suit within eight days of service.

This legal challenge marks one of the most high-profile privacy-related cases involving a former top government official in recent years, raising broader questions about the conduct of security operations and citizens’ rights to privacy—even for those once at the heart of government.
