Tottenham’s Big Problem

Tim Sherwood, a former Tottenham manager, has pointed out what he thinks is causing the team’s struggles. The pressure is on current boss Ange Postecoglou, but Sherwood believes the team’s issues go beyond the manager.

Tottenham had a rough night, losing 2-1 at home to Leicester City, who are fighting to avoid relegation. They started strong with an early goal from Richarlison but went downhill from there. Now, they’ve only won once in their last ten league games and are sitting in 15th place.

ICYMT: Tottenham’s Season ‘Could Be Over

Feeling for Postecoglou

Sherwood, who coached Spurs from 2013 to 2014, feels bad for Postecoglou. He says the coach is weighed down by ongoing problems at the club. On Matchday Live on Optus Sport, Sherwood stressed that changing managers won’t fix things.

“It’s the owners, not the manager,” Sherwood said. “What’s the point of swapping the manager again? They’ve had great managers like Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte. The issue isn’t the coaching staff—they’ve had the right people.

Sherwood thinks fans should focus their anger on the club’s signing choices and owners, not on Postecoglou, who he feels hasn’t gotten enough help.

Problems with Recruitment

Sherwood called out Spurs for their poor recruitment over the years. “It’s not about how much they spend; it’s about where they put the money,” he said. Tottenham spent a lot during the summer transfer window but mostly on young players like Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray. They ignored needed positions in defense and midfield.

Despite signing striker Dominic Solanke, Sherwood believes the team is suffering during this injury crisis. He thinks Postecoglou’s tactics make it clear what players they need, but he hasn’t been given the support to succeed.

Backing Postecoglou

Sherwood believes firing Postecoglou wouldn’t help. “Changing the manager will change nothing. Spurs could still win the Europa League, make it to the Champions League, and win the Carabao Cup. That would be their best season ever.”

Still, he was critical of how Spurs have played recently, especially their losses to struggling teams like Leicester and Ipswich at home. “You can excuse losses to top teams like Arsenal or Man City, but not when you lose to teams at the bottom. No one buys injury excuses then,” he said.

Upcoming Challenges for Spurs

Tottenham plays Elfsborg in the Europa League on Friday, then faces a tough game against Brentford in the Premier League. Sherwood urges the club to fix their recruitment issues and come together under Postecoglou to save their season.
