A coalition of civil society organisations has met with the Inspector General of Police and the National Security Task Force.
The Coalition was made up of the Civic Forum Initiative (CFI), Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO), CDD-Ghana, the Institute of Democratic Governance (IDEG) and the Office of the National Chief Imam.
At the meeting, the CSOs expressed their deep concern over the pockets of post-election violence, vandalism, and disruptions at collation centres following the declaration of results in the 2024 general election.
In no uncertain terms, the civil society group condemned the acts of lawlessness and appealed for an immediate end to the nefarious activities.
To the group, the incidents have resulted in a tense atmosphere, threatening the peace and stability of Ghana.
The appeal by the CSOs have adds to earlier calls for peace by the President-elect John Dramani Mahama, the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Catholic Bishops Conference.
The CSOs called on all Ghanaians to remain calm, responsible and respect the rule of law during the transition period, stating that peace remained the cornerstone of Ghana’s democracy.
The Coalition also acknowledged the efforts of the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces in ensuring law and order.
It also commended the police on the arrest of persons suspected of being involved in acts of vandalism of state property and the disruption of collation processes.
They also urged the Service to remain impartial, uphold the law and continue to protect the safety and security of Ghanaians.
