The Minister of Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah says despite the challenges the country faces, the New patriotic party government has managed the Ghanaian economy well.
He notes that the challenges affected some periods of the economy and various measures have been implemented to ensure the economy recovers.
Speaking to academics from the University of Cape Coast and Cape Coast Technical University at UCC on specific parts of the NPP manifesto including the economy and the fight against galamsey, he said the Ghanaian economy as a whole is experiencing recovery.
Kojo Oppong Nkrumah emphasized that when analyzing the Ghanaian economy, it is crucial to look beyond headline numbers and consider key performance indicators (KPIs) that provide a comprehensive picture.
“Take something like growth. Growth is actually happening when the government introduces policy and the private sector responds and there’s productivity year on year,” he said.
“But growth will show you the quality of the policies the government is introducing and how the private sector is responding to those policies to generate that growth. So just to mention that when we are saying the economy, it’s not just about tax or growth alone,” Mr. Nkrumah continued.
He said Dr. Bawumia introduced over 30 policy prescriptions, demonstrating his competency and capacity.
Mr. Oppong Nkrumah, who also serves as Vice Chair of the NPP’s Manifesto Committee, highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s innovative initiatives, such as the Go4Oil policy as exemplary responses to the current economic crisis.
He explained that the flagbearer’s forward-thinking approach has introduced solutions that benefit Ghanaians.
He argues that the 7% growth achieved in the past was due to fiscal discipline emphasizing that the NPP Presidential candidate will take this further by cutting 3% of GDP from the budget (about 30 billion cedis) and giving it to the private sector.
“And he’s giving it to the private sector to empower the private sector, mostly through infrastructure budgets that the government is not able to fund. Have the private sector fund and execute those budgets and then get paid for them. It will also create expansion for the private sector”
Deputy Chairman of the ‘Bawumia 2024 Campaign Team, Nana Akomea stated that the NPP believes it is when people of talent and ability strive, they pull the rest of society up.
He pointed to the National Health Insurance (2003) and the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programmes as examples of NPP policies that have significantly improved access to healthcare and education, respectively.
