The surgical department of The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has announced the suspension of all elective surgeries due to ongoing lift issues at its surgical block.
The decision, effective immediately, stems from the complete shutdown of the lifts, which has made it impossible to transport patients between floors, severely limiting surgical capabilities.
A statement signed by Prof. J. E. Mensah of the Surgical Department on August 26, 2024, explained that the hospital will now focus exclusively on emergency surgeries to ensure that critical patient care remains uninterrupted.
These emergency procedures the statement revealed will be conducted on the ground floor in the Neuro, Accident Centre, Pediatric, and Gynecology theatres where patients undergoing these surgeries will be accommodated in Wards G, N, A, and B.
The hospital is actively working on replacing one lift and refurbishing another, with the procurement process currently underway with efforts being made to complete these repairs as swiftly as possible to minimize disruption and resume normal surgical operations.
Prof. Mensah acknowledged the challenges posed by this situation and expressed gratitude to the staff for their cooperation and dedication to maintaining patient care during this period.
KBTH assured that further updates will be provided as the situation evolves and advised staff members to direct any questions or concerns to their unit heads.
