Former Black Stars Assistant Coach George Boateng has been appointed as a first-team coach for English Championship side Coventry City. He will work alongside Rhys Carr, the former Individual Development Coach at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Boateng’s term begins immediately as the Sky Blues gather for the start of pre-season training at Ryton.
Boateng, 48, is well-known to City supporters, having played for the club from 1998 to 1999 following his transfer from Feyenoord.
During his tenure, he served as a defensive midfielder, scoring seven goals in 57 appearances.

He famously scored twice against Aston Villa at Villa Park, earning the Sky Blues their first win against the “Villains” in 63 years.
He also represented clubs such as Aston Villa, Hull City, and Nottingham Forest, and made four appearances for the Netherlands national team.
As a coach, he has managed Aston Villa’s under-23s and under-18s, as well as Blackburn Rovers’ under-13s.
George Boateng also served as the assistant coach of the Black Stars during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon. He helped Ghana qualify for the 2022 World Cup but left his role following the team’s early exit in Qatar.
“We are thrilled to welcome George and Rhys to Coventry City. Throughout the extensive recruitment process for this crucial role, they both impressed us with their abilities and each brings essential skills to our football department. Their experience and knowledge will significantly enhance our efforts to optimize team performance and preparation, both leading up to and on matchdays. We are eager to start working with them,” the Club’s Manager, Mark Robins, shared on the club’s website.
