Tyla, the South African music sensation, defeated Burna Boy, Davido, Ayra Starr, and Asake from Nigeria to win the first-ever Grammy for best African music performance for her widely popular worldwide song, Water.
While many Nigerians have taken to controversy, Tyla’s fellow South Africans have expressed pleasure at the win.
Some Nigerians expressed their surprise on social media after Tyla’s win over the more seasoned Nigerian Afrobeats musicians nominated alongside her, given that Tyla is a relative newbie to the African music scene.

Yet, a lot of Tyla’s supporters believe that she deserved to win because of the enormous success of her Grammy-winning song.
Water shot to popularity last year, breaking records on streaming services and topping charts such as the Billboard Hot 100. It quickly became a global summer song.
“This is absurd! I never imagined that at age 22, I would be able to claim a Grammy.” Shining in a special Versace gown, Tyla shouted as she collected the prestigious award in the US on Sunday night.
On social media, some Africans have praised Sunday’s Grammy Awards as a historic occasion for the talent on the continent. Trevor Noah, a comedian from South Africa, hosted the greatest music event for a record-breaking fourth time, Burna Boy performed, and Tyla won.
