GFA sacks Black Stars coach Chris Hughton and his technical team

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) made a significant announcement tonight, stating that Chris Hughton has been removed from his position as head coach of the Black Stars, the senior national team. The decision to terminate the whole technical staff was likewise made by the GFA Executive Council.

This follows the Black Stars’ underwhelming showing at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where they were ousted for the second time in a row in the group round of competition.

Despite the fact that Hughton, 65, had led the team to AFCON qualification, their dismal performance drew criticism from all quarters and demands for improvement.

Dispute over payment: Former Black Stars coaches vow to sue GFA

The Ministry of Youth and Sports is still owed $220,000 even after we have paid CK Akonnor $238,000.

“Would they owe a white coach for 11 months?” Kwesi Appiah bemoans.

In its statement, the GFA said that it would present “a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars” in the upcoming days, but it did not go into detail about the reasons behind the decision.

The selection of a new head coach and maybe a reorganization of the technical staff are expected components of this plan.

With a 21-month contract, Chris Hughton assumed leadership of the Black Stars in February 2023.

He had a great start to the season, winning five of his team’s eight games and drawing two, which helped them qualify for the AFCON.

Nevertheless, the Black Stars have not fared well lately, faltering in friendlies and eventually failing to advance past the AFCON group stage.

Hughton’s exit and the breakdown of the coaching team, which included George Boateng and Mas-Ud Dramani, Hughton’s two assistants, and goalkeeper Richard Kingson, signal a major change for the Black Stars.

Finding a new coaching staff capable of leading the squad back to victory on the international scene is a critical issue for the GFA as the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers draw near.
