The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Rt. Honorable Kingsford Alban Sumana Bagbin has hinted that Parliament intends to undertake some legacy projects.
Speaking at the launch of the celebration of parliament’s 30th Anniversary of Parliamentary Democracy under the Fourth Republic at parliament house in Accra, the speaker said these projects form part of the many activities, parliament is embarking on as part of its 30 years anniversary celebration.
The Parliament of Ghana formally launched its 30th Anniversary of Democracy under the Fourth Republic on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, to highlight the contribution the house has played and continues to play to strengthen Ghana’s democratic gains.
In his introduction, speaker Bagbin said “We are this year observing the combined 30th anniversary of our Constitution, our Parliament, and our Fourth Republic. Dare I say that there is a fourth 30th anniversary that we celebrate this year, and that is the 30th anniversary of one Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin in parliament.”
Speaking on the theme Thirty (30) Years of Parliamentary Democracy under the Fourth Republic: The Journey This Far”, speaker Bagbin said parliament under his leadership as part of the 30th anniversary will construct some legacy projects which among other things will depict Africa’s culture, value, and identity.
“A few legacy products or projects have also been planned such as cutting the sod for the building of what we are describing as a democracy house. We need to inculcate the culture of democracy; these are some of the physical structures that will keep reminding everybody of the value of democracy. We intend to construct a bust to depict African democracy. The ceremonial gate of Parliament will also be reconstructed” he said.
According to him, Parliament is working on a funding model that relies on its strategic partnerships to deliver this legacy project and not depend on the already ailing economy.
He further said a planning committee has been set up to navigate through the celebrations and it will be chaired by the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Hon. Samuel Atta Akyea.
Also, the activities of the committee would be coordinated by the Clerk to Parliament, Mr. Cyril Kwabena Oteng Nsiah.
The year-long celebration will zone the country into six. Programmes will be planned to suit the peculiarities of each of the six zones.
Programmes he explained will include regional activities such as public forums, mock Parliaments, and health walks. At the national level, there will again be public forums and lectures. There will be a documentary on the history of Parliament in Ghana which will not focus on the fourth republic only.
“We want to take you backward to know that some of the things we are doing today were done before. We are not reinventing the wheel” he continued.
He, therefore, urged all and sundry to reflect on the theme for the celebration: Thirty (30) Years of Parliamentary Democracy under the Fourth Republic: The Journey This Far”, as a program of activities for the celebration unfolds.
He further urged members of parliament to fully participate in all the activities earmarked for the celebration to help make the occasion successful.
