The hashtag “FixTheCountry” Movement says their rejection of the invitation from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to join in its demonstration on Thursday, February 10, will prevent the reintroduction of partisanship into the movement’s agenda of being non-partisan.
According to the Movement, discussions on issues of national interest such as the e-levy must be devoid of partisanship which the NDC’s invitation signifies.
The Movement on Friday, February 4, 2022, received an invitation from the NDC to partake in the scheduled protest which the movement declined.
According to the movement, they have decided to enlarge the conversation on the E-Levy adding that “one of the functions as to why government continues to borrow themselves to deep debt and hoping to come back to Ghanaian citizens to bail them out while they make millions on our back, is a question which we do not want to see continue to persist”.
As such they are inviting the NDC to convey their stance to the public in a press conference stating its position clearly.
Speaking exclusively to ATL FM NEWS, Convener for the movement, Mr. Oliver Barker-Vormawor indicated that his group is more inclined to widening the conversation on governments borrowing and its inability to protect the public purse.
To him, Government’s assertion to use the proceeds from the proposed e-levy for developmental projects in the country can only be an illusion, hinting that the “cocoa and mineral reserves has amounted to nothing”.
He emphasized that “as much as Ghanaians are sympathetic to the needs of government as well to govern with money, they think that the measure itself targets the poorer segment of our society in the way that does not affect the rich and we think that, that has to be addressed.”
Meanwhile, The National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it has changed the nature of the demonstration it intends to embark on.
Speaking at a press conference, Youth Organiser of the party, George Opare Addo explained the party will this time hold a non-partisan demonstration which will involve Civil Society Organization (CSOs) and all other affected parties.
