The Executive Director of the Kumasi Institute of Technology and Environment (KITE), Ishmael Edjekumhene says the government must do something about Ghana’s deteriorating energy sector.
He notes that although the Energy Sector Recovery Program (ESRP) was initiated in 2019 to support the sector in ensuring effective and reliable energy for the country, there has been no progress in preventing the risks stated by the government since the program’s inception.
He explained saying “the government through the ESRP told us that our energy sector is not in a good state. The first few lines in that document state that the government is seeking to ensure the financial sustainability of the energy sector. However, since the document was put together in 2019, we have not made significant progress towards abetting some of the dangers that the government raised in the document.”
In an interview on JOY NEWS monitored by ATL FM NEWS, he indicated that the country seems to be fine in the energy sector but on the grounds “we are not safe.”
On his part, Energy Analysts Kojo Opoku reiterated that the energy subdivision is not in a safe space because there are persistent problems such as weak infrastructure.

He explained that“the stature in the sector is really deteriorating. People talk of the cash waterfall. The cash waterfall only distributes what comes into the basket.”
To him, the sector’s failure to renew the energy tariffs this year is an indication that “there is slightly a problem underneath”.
