Nana Kwame Ampadu, a legendary highlife musician, has died at the age of 76.
Bessa Simons, the acting President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), verified this to ghanaweekend.com.
According to Mr. Simons, Nana Ampadu died on Tuesday, September 28, 2021, after being taken to the Intensive Care Unit of the Legon Hospital in Accra.
Nana Ampadu was the founder and leader of the African Brothers Band, which was established in 1963.
Several famous highlife songs have been attributed to the renowned highlife musician. He is credited with writing approximately 800 songs.
He rose to popularity in 1967 with the publication of his song Ebi Te Yie (“Some Are Well Seated”), which was seen as critical of the then-ruling National Liberation Council and quickly vanished from the radios, only to reappear after the end of military control.
He was named the “Adwontofoohene,” or King of Singers, in 1973 after winning a national competition in Ghana.
Tributes to the late icon have already poured in.
