Mr. António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, has appointed Mr. Annadif Khatir Mahamat Saleh of Chad as his new Special Representative and Head of the UN Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS).
Mr Saleh succeeds Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas of Ghana, who completed his six-year assignment with UNOWAS on April 7, 2021.
Mr Saleh will take office on Monday, April 26th, according to a statement released by UNOWAS and copied to the Ghana News Agency.

Mr Saleh had considerable national and foreign experience, having participated in a number of African peace initiatives, including those in Niger, the Central African Republic, and Sudan, according to the statement.
He was the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Mali and the Head of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) since 2015, before taking on his new role .
From 2012 to 2014, Mr Saleh served as the African Union Special Representative and Head of the Union’s Mission in Somalia.
He served in Chad as Foreign Minister (1997-2003), President’s Chief of Staff (2004-2006), Presidency Secretary-General (2010-2012), and Permanent Representative of the African Union Commission to the European Union (2006-2010).
