Work on transforming Nkawkaw Sports Stadium into an ultra-modern sporting facility has yet to begin six months after the sod-cutting ceremony, creating fears among local chiefs.
Nana Kwadwo Akuamoah, Kwahu Dadiehene, told the Ghana News Agency in Nkwakaw that the citizens of Kwahu were dissatisfied with the current state of the stadium, which cost 27 million Ghana cedis.
The Middle Belt Development Authority is sponsoring the project, which is part of the government’s one million per constituency initiative.
Mr. Isaac Asiamah, the former Sports Minister, broke ground on the sports stadium renovation on September 4, 2020, with the project scheduled to be completed in two years.
The stadium, which has a capacity of close to 10,000 people, was supposed to be built in two stages, but residents say no construction has started since the sod-cutting ceremony.
The situation has raised concerns among stakeholders, especially among Okwahu United chiefs and leaders.
Nana Akuamoah said that the Nkawkaw Sports Stadium was the main venue for Okwahu United, one of Ghana’s most popular traditional teams, and that the delay was affecting the club’s activities.

He noted that even if phase one of the project was not approaching completion, it would have been preferable to see it continue, “but as it stands now, the stadium has yet to receive the necessary facelift.”
Several attempts by the chiefs and the people to get the contractor to start working have failed, he said.
Nana Akuamoah has urged the government to intervene to ensure that work on the project will begin as soon as possible.
“Because residents in the region are very enthusiastic about the initiative, construction on the stadium must be completed as soon as possible so that the people of Kwahu and its environs can enjoy football activities,” he said.
The contractor came to the site after the sod-cutting ceremony, graded it, and then left, according to Mr. Yaw Obrempong Yeboah, a resident of Nkawkaw and a sports enthusiast.
He said that due to the current condition of the stadium, Nkawkaw teams will be unable to use it, calling the situation “very upsetting.”
If the project’s current state remained unchanged by the end of March, he said, they will be forced to stage a protest.
