The Ministry of Transport has confirmed that an additional 100 public buses will arrive in Ghana within the next two months as part of efforts to improve transportation services and address persistent commuting challenges across the country.

The announcement was made by Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe, who said the incoming fleet forms part of government’s broader plan to procure approximately 300 buses to strengthen the national transport system.

According to the Minister, the first batch of 100 buses has already been delivered and deployed mainly for intercity transport operations, helping to improve connectivity between major towns and cities.

More Buses on the Way

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, June 8, 2026, Mr. Nikpe acknowledged that while the initial rollout has provided some relief, the current fleet remains insufficient to fully meet growing transport demand.

He explained that the buses currently in operation are largely 29-seater vehicles designed for intercity services, but additional investments are needed to significantly expand passenger capacity.

The Minister expressed confidence that the arrival of the next batch of buses will help ease pressure on the transport system and improve mobility for commuters.

STC Fleet Set for Major Expansion

Mr. Nikpe also revealed that the State Transport Corporation (STC) is expected to receive 140 additional buses, a move expected to further strengthen public transportation across the country.

The expansion will introduce more high-capacity vehicles into the system, improving both intercity and urban transport services.

“Within the next two months, the next 100 buses will come in. By that time, STC will also get the 140 buses, and we will be able to add more high-occupancy buses to the system,” he said.

Government Working with Private Operators

The Minister stressed that solving Ghana’s transport challenges will require close collaboration between government and private transport operators.

According to him, authorities are developing policy frameworks that will encourage sustainable investment in the sector while ensuring reliable and affordable services for the public.

He noted that government remains aware of the difficulties faced by commuters and is focused on long-term solutions capable of supporting future growth.

Improving Mobility Nationwide

The latest announcement comes as demand for efficient public transportation continues to increase, particularly in urban centres where congestion and limited transport capacity remain major concerns.

Officials believe the additional buses will improve service availability, increase passenger capacity and reduce pressure on existing transport networks.

With another 100 buses expected within two months and STC preparing to expand its fleet, government says significant progress is being made toward improving mobility and enhancing public transportation across Ghana.
