The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) is set to introduce an artificial intelligence-driven system aimed at transforming the country’s import clearance process, beginning February 1, 2026.
The new digital platform will be piloted at the Tema Port and is expected to significantly reduce clearance delays, enhance risk assessment, and curb revenue leakages at Ghana’s ports of entry.
Speaking on the initiative, a senior official of the Customs Division explained that the AI-powered system will analyze cargo data in real time, allowing customs officers to identify high-risk consignments more efficiently while fast-tracking compliant imports.
“This system uses advanced data analytics to profile shipments before arrival. It enables us to focus our attention on high-risk cargo while allowing low-risk goods to be cleared faster,” the official said.
According to the GRA, the introduction of artificial intelligence into customs operations forms part of broader reforms to modernise revenue mobilization and improve trade facilitation in line with global best practices.
The authority believes the system will also minimize human interference in the clearance process, a move expected to reduce corruption and improve transparency at the ports.
“With the deployment of AI, decision-making will be driven largely by data rather than discretion. This will help enhance accountability and boost investor confidence in Ghana’s trade environment,” the official added.
While Tema Port will serve as the initial testing ground, the GRA says plans are underway to extend the system to other entry points across the country once the pilot phase proves successful.
The Customs Division has assured importers, freight forwarders, and other stakeholders that adequate sensitization and training will be provided to ensure a smooth transition ahead of the rollout.
