Chelsea Poised for Big Win Over Manchester United in FA Cup

Chelsea are setting their sights on a massive win over Manchester United in Sunday night’s Women’s FA Cup Final, with the chance to claim a domestic treble and move past their recent Champions League disappointment. After being knocked out of Europe by Barcelona in a tough 8-2 aggregate loss, the Blues are more motivated than ever to end the season on a high note.

ICYMT: Amorim Unsure of Lineup for Upcoming Europa League Final

This game is more than just a final it’s a shot at redemption. And according to former Matilda Ash Sykes, Chelsea are the clear favourites. Speaking on The Optus Sport Football Podcast, she said the sting of their Champions League exit is only fueling their hunger to finish strong. “I think they’ll win the treble,” she said. “Chelsea’s record against United is just too strong, and they seem really fired up after missing out on Europe. They won’t ease up now.”

Sykes also pointed out that finals can often come down to a single big moment just like Sam Kerr’s goal in the 2023 final, or Ella Toone’s strike last year. But she believes this year will be different. “Honestly, I think Chelsea will blow them away. I can’t see United keeping up.”

The stakes are high. Not only are Chelsea going for their sixth straight WSL title, but lifting the FA Cup at Wembley especially after United won it last year—would be a sweet finish to their domestic season. Last time these two met in the final, Sam Kerr stole the spotlight with a 68th-minute winner. Sadly for Chelsea, she’s still sidelined with an ACL injury, and it’s now been 16 months since she’s played. Thankfully, Mayra Ramirez is healthy and ready to go.

As for the pressure of playing at Wembley, manager Sonia Bompastor is confident her team can handle it. “I’m lucky to have so many English players who’ve played there before,” she said. “They’ve been helping the rest of the squad get ready mentally. Wembley can be intimidating, but it’s also a huge opportunity to enjoy a special moment.”

The Women’s FA Cup final kicks off at 10.30pm Sunday night, live on Optus Sport and Chelsea fans will be hoping it’s another night to remember.
