Jess Ziu’s love for football is so contagious that you might not even guess the tough setbacks she’s faced just by talking to her. The Republic of Ireland international has been through not one, but two serious ACL injuries, yet her energy and positivity shine through. Jess, now 22, had to miss the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia after tearing her ACL the year before. It was a major blow, but she didn’t let it keep her down for long. She made a strong comeback, even playing a part in Ireland’s memorable 3-1 win over France last July at Páirc Uí Chaoimh. Unfortunately, not long after that big moment, she was hit with another ACL injury her second in such a short career. Jess Ziu’s Unwavering Spirit.

Despite the setback, Jess has stayed focused and hopeful. Thanks to the support system at West Ham, including top-class facilities and a caring team around her, she’s been making great strides in her recovery. On the RTÉ Soccer Podcast, she opened up about her journey so far and shared how determined she is to return to action. While she originally had her sights set on making the EURO squad, Jess explained that missing that target has allowed her to slow things down a bit and focus on healing right. “I’m almost seven and a half months post-op, and I’m doing really well. Running, kicking, even change of direction I’m about 75% of the way back,” she said. Although the WSL season is wrapping up soon, Jess sees a silver lining. She’s aiming to be fully ready for pre-season, where she can ease back into competitive play and build up her minutes gradually. Jess Ziu’s Unwavering Spirit.
Because she’s been through this before, Jess knew exactly what she needed to do the second time around. Compared to her first ACL tear which was more severe and included meniscus damage and broken bones this one wasn’t as painful. She even managed to walk off the pitch. Jess wasted no time jumping into rehab. “I was barely using crutches, got myself ankle weights, got on the cold compression machine right away, and the girls at West Ham were incredible, helping me out with everything.” From her early days playing in Finglas to becoming a regular for both club and country, Jess Ziu’s story is one of resilience, determination, and a seriously inspiring attitude. Fans won’t have to wait too long she’s on her way back.
