Pop star Amaarae stirred controversy after skipping her hit “Sad Gurlz Luv Money” during her Coachella performance and remaining silent on galamsey protests. Now, she responds to critics questioning her loyalty to Ghana, stating, “I gave my heart and soul… I’ll still rep it!”
The Ghanaian-American artist faced backlash from some social media users following her appearance at the 2025 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. While her set received praise from fans and international audiences, the omission of her global hit fueled speculation about a rift with fellow Ghanaian artist Moliy.
Critics also scrutinized her perceived silence during Ghana’s anti-illegal mining protests last year. Many argued that as a recognized figure, she should have used her platform to address important national issues. Although some reports indicated that she did support the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protests in 2023, social media users continued to question her commitment to Ghana, suggesting she prioritized her image and career over social activism.

In response, Amaarae took to social media to clarify her dedication to Ghanaian music and culture. She emphasized that her Coachella performance was the result of years of effort to spotlight Ghanaian artistry.
“Can’t please everybody, unfortunately. I usually don’t address this, but I poured my heart into this performance, and I’m proud of the outcome! I’ve used my voice in many ways, but people often lack the full picture,” she wrote.
Amaarae also highlighted Ghanaian talent during her set, featuring songs from artists like Joey B, the Asakaa Boys, La Même Gang, and Eazzy. This decision was celebrated by many fans as a proud moment for the country’s music industry, despite the criticisms.
