ChatGPT, OpenAI’s AI-driven chatbot platform, now offers direct code editing for macOS users.
The latest version of the ChatGPT app allows for code modifications in supported developer tools like Xcode, VS Code, and JetBrains. An “auto-apply” mode can be activated, enabling ChatGPT to make edits without requiring extra clicks.
As of Thursday, subscribers to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team can access this feature by updating their macOS app, with plans for it to be available to Enterprise, Edu, and free users next week.
In a post on X, Alexander Embiricos from OpenAI’s product team mentioned that the Windows version of the ChatGPT app will also receive direct code editing capabilities soon.
This new functionality builds on OpenAI’s “work with apps” feature, introduced in beta in November 2024, which allows the macOS app to read code within several developer-focused environments, reducing the need for code copying and pasting.
With direct code editing, ChatGPT is now positioned to compete more closely with popular AI coding tools like Cursor and GitHub Copilot. OpenAI is reportedly planning to launch a dedicated product for software engineering in the coming months.
ICYMT: I Will Turn Down Any Appointment – Disappointed Mzbel Reveals
AI coding assistants are increasingly gaining popularity, with most respondents in GitHub’s recent poll indicating they use AI tools in some capacity. Y Combinator partner Jared Friedman noted that a quarter of YC’s W25 startup batch have 95% of their codebases generated by AI.
However, there are significant security, copyright, and reliability concerns associated with AI coding tools. A survey by software vendor Harness revealed that many developers spend more time debugging AI-generated code and addressing security vulnerabilities than they do on human-written contributions.
A Google report highlighted that while AI can expedite code reviews and improve documentation, it may compromise delivery stability.
