A medical herbalist at the Medi-Moses Centre, Dr. Prince Osei, has advised individuals to undergo proper testing before taking medication for typhoid fever.
According to him, symptoms of typhoid can resemble those of malaria, the common cold, or other infections, leading to potential misdiagnosis and incorrect treatment.
Speaking in an interview with GTV, Dr. Osei emphasized, “The only way to know for sure is through a lab test. You can’t use your symptoms to diagnose. The symptoms are quite similar to other infections.”
He urged individuals experiencing fever, headache, abdominal pain, vomiting, or diarrhea to visit a hospital for a blood test, which can help identify the presence of the typhoid-causing bacteria, Salmonella typhi.
Dr. Osei also highlighted the role of herbal medicine in treating typhoid, stating that it provides a multi-compound approach to fighting bacterial infections.
“Most antibiotics work through a single pathway, but bacteria can develop resistance. Herbal medicines, on the other hand, contain multiple compounds that attack bacteria in different ways, making them an effective alternative or supplement to orthodox medicine.”

To prevent typhoid fever, he advised proper hygiene practices, including washing hands and food thoroughly, cautioning against consuming contaminated street food, especially salads from roadside vendors.
“If you’re buying waakye or any street food with salad, be mindful of where you get it. Contaminated food is a major cause of typhoid.”
Dr. Osei recommended boosting immunity with fruits, vegetables, and a balanced diet, adding, “A strong immune system can help your body fight infections better.”
Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection spread through contaminated food and water, with health experts emphasizing hygiene, early diagnosis, and proper treatment to curb its impact.
