Facing the Challenge
David Moyes is back as Everton’s manager. He knows the two teams from Merseyside are in different places right now. He says Everton needs to work hard to catch Liverpool, especially with the last derby at Goodison Park coming up. David Moyes Embarks on Ambitious Mission.
This game will be the 122nd and final match between these rivals at Goodison. Right now, there’s a big gap. Liverpool is at the top of the Premier League and trying to extend their lead. They’re 30 points ahead of Everton, who are just nine points clear of the relegation zone.

Money Matters and Squad Strength
In the last ten years, Everton has spent about £300 million (AU$593 million). This money mostly came from former owner Farhad Moshiri’s early days. But due to recent money issues, the club has had to cut back on spending and can’t meet some financial rules.
In contrast, Liverpool has spent over £580 million (AU$1.14 billion) in the same time. This has helped them win the Premier League, Champions League, and other cups. Because of their spending, Liverpool has a much stronger team. While Liverpool’s coach rested several star players for one match, Moyes had to rely on two goalkeepers and three young players during a tough cup loss to Bournemouth.
Moyes’ Commitment to Close the Gap
Despite these challenges, Moyes is set on closing the gap between the teams. He recalls times when Everton finished above Liverpool, even if it’s not been the case lately.
“We’ve always been chasing Liverpool, probably more now than ever,” Moyes said. “The gap between us is probably the biggest it’s been in a long time.
“I need to close that gap and bring my club closer to theirs if I can.
“There’s a big difference in transfers, and we all know about our struggles.”
Moyes also pointed out that the Premier League can surprise you. He mentioned Everton’s unexpected 2-0 win over Liverpool last April. He hopes for another shock this time.
Last Derby at Goodison Park
This match was supposed to happen in December but got postponed due to a storm. Now, it’s Moyes’ chance to manage Everton’s last Merseyside derby at Goodison Park after taking over from Sean Dyche last month.
Moyes has had some good moments in these derbies, but his overall record is not the best. He has four wins and 13 losses in 25 matches. Looking back, he said these games used to be more physical.
“When it was Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard, it was all about who would kick who first,” Moyes said. “Games aren’t like that anymore. The refereeing has changed.
“We were just getting competitive in the Premier League back then. The derbies were more evenly matched. Liverpool were tough, but there were years when we finished above them.
“It took a long time to build a team that could compete with Liverpool. Right now, we still have a way to go.”
Team News and Injury Update
For the upcoming match, Moyes hopes left-back Vitalii Mykolenko can recover from a calf injury in time to play this important game. David Moyes Embarks on Ambitious Mission.
