President John Dramani Mahama has named Mohammed Abdul-Salam as the acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), effective January 15, 2025.
The appointment, which aligns with Article 195(1) of the 1992 Constitution and Section 45(1) of the National Lotto Act, 2006 (Act 722), marks a new chapter for the authority amidst a leadership transition.
Appointment Details
Abdul-Salam, who currently serves as the Northern Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), will temporarily lead the NLA while awaiting advice from the NLA Board in consultation with the Public Services Commission.
In an official statement signed by Callistus Mahama, Ph.D., Secretary to the President, Abdul-Salam was congratulated on his appointment and encouraged to bring innovation and stability to the lottery sector.
Leadership Transition
The appointment follows the resignation of Sammi Awuku, who had led the NLA since his appointment under the previous administration of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Awuku officially stepped down on January 13, 2025, after being elected as the Member of Parliament for Akuapem North in the Eastern Region.
In his resignation letter, Awuku emphasized his commitment to focusing on his parliamentary duties and serving his constituents. He also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the growth and reforms at the NLA during his tenure.

Challenges and Expectations
Abdul-Salam’s appointment comes at a crucial time for the NLA, with stakeholders calling for continued reforms to address challenges in the lottery sector.
Industry players are optimistic about his leadership, particularly given his background in the NDC, which has been vocal about promoting accountability and efficiency in state-owned enterprises.
Observers are keenly watching how Abdul-Salam will steer the NLA, build on the work of his predecessor, and deliver on the expectations of both the public and the industry.
This leadership change is expected to shape the future of Ghana’s lottery industry and its contribution to national development.
