The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has launched a sharp critique against the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, accusing them of what it calls a “parliamentary coup” intended to obstruct government business and sway the 2024 elections.
In a statement issued yesterday, NPP Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, claimed to have unearthed a “shocking” NDC document titled Winning the 2024 Elections and Beyond: A Comprehensive NDC Strategy.
Mr. Ahiagbah alleged that this plan outlines a strategy for the NDC to use its parliamentary numbers to “create gridlock, derail key government policies, and ultimately influence the election outcome in their favor.”
“Moving on to the NDC’s document to win the 2024 election, which I’ve just shown you,” Ahiagbah asserted, “our verifications show that it is a legitimate operational document of the National Democratic Congress.
In other words, it’s not a fake document; it’s a true document, a document the NDC has been working with since January 7th or 8th, 2021. The document consists of 11 chapters, each directing the NDC on various disruptive, unfair, and outright crude tactics to aid its capturing of power in 2024. The document and its prescriptions make nonsense of patriotism, responsibility, democracy, and political ethics.”
Mr. Ahiagbah further accused Speaker Bagbin of playing a central role in this alleged scheme, claiming that by “deliberately frustrating the government’s legislative agenda, the Speaker is undermining the integrity of parliament.”
He elaborated, “It takes two to tumble in Parliament, and we have a situation of near members in Parliament, and the NDC, the other side, with an equally significant number of people to participate in the legislative agenda of the country, says that they are determined to prevent the government from enacting legislation.
And whilst I’m saying this, I want you to begin to think about what has transpired in our country from January 7th, 8th, 2021 till now.”
Mr. Ahiagbah contended that “all the debate that has happened, all the policies that government has put forward, you would see a classic picture evolving if you pay attention to see that every turn the NDC will oppose the government, often for no justified reason.
“Without offering alternatives, without proposing any compelling or superior alternatives, they simply would just refuse to participate or to have government continue with its legislative agenda.”
Responding on OKAY FM, NDC Deputy General Secretary Mustapha Gbande dismissed the allegations, calling the document a “fabrication meant to destabilize Ghana’s democracy.”
He argued that “the ongoing parliamentary conflicts are damaging the reputation of Ghana’s democracy.”
Mr. Gbande concluded that collaboration, rather than accusations, was essential, saying, “both the NPP and NDC share a commitment to national development, elaborating on the importance of working together for the good of the nation.
