The Minister for Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development (MLGDRD), Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah, has announced that the ministry’s Local Economic Development Policy and Implementation Plan (2024-2029) will empower local authorities and foster economic growth.
Speaking at the launch of the Strategic Local Government Economic Development policy at the Institute of Local Government Studies, Mr. Korsah stated, “The policy will create a conducive environment at the district level, supporting sustained local business growth, decent employment opportunities, and economic empowerment for all Ghanaians.”
In an interview on Okay FM, he explained that the policy is designed to enhance local governments’ financial independence by exploring ways to generate revenue without relying solely on central government funds.
He also assured that any challenges encountered with the policy will be addressed and reviewed for improvements, emphasizing “We will consider and review all challenges faced to refine and enhance the policy,” he noted.
Additionally, Mr. Korsah revealed that a university proposal is currently under consideration in Parliament, where the initiative aims to provide ministers with updated knowledge on governance and emerging trends.
“The university, which is being discussed in Parliament, will assist ministers in staying informed about new governance practices and trends,” Mr. Korsah said.
