The Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong says the time has come for scientists in Sub-Saharan Africa to devise solutions to improve the lives of the people in the sub-region.
In an address read on his behalf by the Provost of the College of Health and Allied Sciences, Professor Martins Ekor, the vice-chancellor said though civilization commenced in Africa, Africans have become mere consumers of products from scientific research of people of other continents.
In his view, scientists doing their bid in this direction will help Africans in Sub-Saharan to be self-dependent and impact the world at large.
Thus, his charge to participants of a three-day 13th Convention of Biomedical Research and the first College of Health and Allied Sciences joint scientific conference being held at UCC is for them to arise to work hard to expand the frontiers of scientific research in sub-Saharan Africa.
Meanwhile, the conference with the theme “Deploying cutting edge biomedical and clinical research to achieve the sustainable development Goals in sub-Saharan Africa” is focused on how scientists can effectively translate their research findings into the life of end users.
Speaking to ATL FM NEWS on the sidelines during the conference, the Scientific Committee Chairperson, Dr. Akwasi Anyanful, stressed the aim of the conference is to enable participants to have the right exposure in devising solutions in that regard.
“We are focused here to see what type of findings we have and most importantly how we can translate our research findings into people’s life. If we obtain findings and we don’t translate them into people’s life then they are useless,” he said.
He explained that the joint scientific conference revolves around SDG 3 which is to make everybody healthy by 2030.
The President of the Convention of Biomedical Research, Ghana, Professor George Acquaah-Mensah is also of the view that the theme for the conference speaks to the necessity of the present age.
He noted, “Necessity as had been said, is a mother of invention and the pandemic which we would like to think is rescinding now has demanded innovation, and science has responded to the challenge so our theme is apt. It really speaks to the challenges of our time.”
The conference is from Wednesday, August 24th, to Thursday, August 26th, 2022.
