Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, a Deputy Minister of Energy, has stressed that Ghana will not rush through the energy transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy.
He remarked that Ghana, which produces oil, will go at its own pace rather than following the plans and preparations of other countries.
According to Dr. Amin Adam, Ghana must maximize the benefits of crude oil production in order to expand the economy before considering leaving the business.
His comment comes at the back of a similar statement made by the finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta that Ghana needs to maximize its full potential in the crude oil sector.
The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia also stated that there was the need to bring everybody on board if they are to succeed in the energy sector.
However, Dr. Amin Adam intimated that the country will not be pressured into reaching the energy transition by 2050.
He explained that Ghana needs to continue in the production of oil and gas but will to the transition “at our own pace”.
“We need the revenue to develop our country, we need the value addition and therefore cannot abandon it is now. Yes, we want to transition in terms of scaling up renewable energy, we even want to introduce nuclear energy as part of our primary energy source and then we want to produce oil and gas except that we will also increase our mitigation programs, that is trees planting or afforestation, carbon capture and storage programs we will introduce.”
He continued by saying “We want to adhere to the zero-flaring policy for gas because we do not already emit much and in Ghana in particular, we emit just about 0.012% of the global emissions so we want to be part of the whole world so that we can improve on the carbon capture techniques. We can reduce our emissions globally but we should be spear sometime before we can reach our goal of net zero by 2050 0r 2070.”
