In honor of International Women’s Day, Spotify newly launched the EQUAL hub. With the latest EQUAL Music Program, which debuted today, the pioneer of all aspects audio can also extend its worldwide contribution to promoting diversity for women in music.
The global campaign is groundbreaking in that it adapts and extends the cumulative blueprint of Spotify’s successful projects into a seamless experience – empowering female artists under one brand – in order to promote gender equality in music. Just one out of every five singers in the charts is a woman, notwithstanding how important women’s presence is to Spotify’s and the music industry’s growth today. Spotify takes the task of eradicating these inequalities seriously, and agrees that the first move toward amplifying the work of all female artists is to include vital services to this group in order to build opportunities.
“In a period where we as a nation are re-examining equity on so many fronts, Spotify is prioritising its mission to allow female faces and perspectives seen and heard,” said Phiona Okumu, Spotify Head of Music Sub-Saharan Africa. ” Our mission is to lead by example, collaborating with African music industry stakeholders who have the resources and platforms to help propel the next wave of female musicians to worthy new heights.”
Gyakie, a Ghanaian Afrobeats and Afro-fusion musician, is the first African artist to be chosen for Spotify’s inaugural class of EQUAL musicians, which kicks off the initiative. The 20-year-old artist, who recently launched her debut EP “Seed,” has gained prominence not only in Ghana, but also in Nigeria and Kenya, where her single “Forever” is a fan favorite, with a remix featuring Omah Lay close behind.

“I feel very privileged to be the first African woman to collaborate with Spotify on EQUAL. This is huge for a lot of women on the continent and around the world. This is not something I take lightly. In an industry where women’s voices can quickly be drowned out, I’m dedicated to doing my part…with volume,” Gyakie says of her participation in the initiative.
American rapper Saweetie, Brazilian pop star DUDA BEAT, British singer-songwriter Griff, Mexico’s Natalia Lafourcade, and German singer Zoe Wees – Global Artist of the Month – are among the other female artists chosen for the inaugural class.
