The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has decried the assault on Mr. Mohammed Aminu Alabira, a Reporter for CITI FM/TV, during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Parliamentary Primaries in the Yendi Constituency on Saturday, January 27, 2024.
In an official report to the Northern Regional Executives of the GJA, Mr. Alabira indicated that while executing his professional duties, he was physically assaulted by Alhaji Farouk Aliu Mahama, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Yendi.
Mr. Alabira was allegedly slapped and kicked, resulting in his fall to the ground. He further stated that the MP’s supporters joined in the assault, despite the presence of security personnel who eventually intervened to rescue him.
A statement issued on January 28, 2024, by Yakubu Abdul-Majeed, the Northern Regional chairman of the GJA vehemently condemned the act on the Journalist.
It urged the Ghana Police Service to promptly apprehend the MP for Yendi over this aggressive act.
The Association says it will work closely with the Police to ensure that justice is served in this matter assuring its readiness to safeguard all journalists in the region, particularly as the political climate becomes more intense.
