The Government of Ghana is preparing another evacuation exercise for its citizens in South Africa as tensions mount ahead of planned anti-immigrant demonstrations expected to take place on Tuesday, June 30.
The move comes amid growing fears of possible violence following renewed xenophobic sentiments and calls by some groups for undocumented foreign nationals to leave the country.
The Ghana High Commission in South Africa has urged Ghanaians to remain indoors, suspend business activities and avoid unnecessary movement while security agencies monitor the situation.
High Commission Issues Safety Advisory
In a public advisory, Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quashie, assured citizens that the Mission, working together with the Government of Ghana, is taking steps to ensure their safety.
He advised Ghanaians staying in accommodation arranged by the High Commission, including churches and hotels, to remain there until further notice.
According to him, residents should not open their shops or travel unnecessarily on the day of the planned demonstration.
Police Protection Arranged
The High Commissioner disclosed that the South African Police Service has been engaged to provide security for Ghanaians staying at designated shelters.
He urged citizens to remain calm, cooperate with authorities and strictly comply with all safety directives issued by the High Commission.
Mr. Quashie expressed confidence that the situation would improve and encouraged Ghanaians to remain law-abiding throughout the period.
Fresh Evacuation Exercise Planned
Government has confirmed that preparations are underway for another repatriation exercise for Ghanaians who have registered to return home.
According to the High Commission, details regarding the dates and arrangements for the next evacuation will be communicated in the coming days.
The planned operation follows earlier evacuation efforts that have already assisted hundreds of Ghanaians in returning home safely.

Tensions Continue to Rise
The advisory comes as June 30 marks the unofficial deadline set by some South African groups for undocumented foreign nationals to leave the country.
The development has heightened anxiety among migrant communities, prompting many foreign nationals to seek temporary shelter or make arrangements to leave South Africa.
Authorities continue to monitor the evolving security situation closely.
Government Reaffirms Commitment
The Government of Ghana says the safety and welfare of its citizens abroad remain a priority.
Officials have assured Ghanaians that support will continue throughout the period and that additional measures will be implemented where necessary to protect citizens affected by the current situation.
The High Commission has encouraged all Ghanaians in South Africa to remain vigilant and follow official updates until tensions subside.
