The Ghana Boundary Commission has intensified efforts to safeguard the country’s international borders, calling on residents in frontier communities to help protect boundary markers and report activities that could threaten national security.

The renewed effort forms part of a broader initiative to strengthen border management and preserve Ghana’s territorial integrity amid growing concerns about encroachment, damage to boundary pillars and cross-border security challenges.

The Commissioner-General of the Ghana Boundary Commission, Major General Anthony Ntem, made the appeal during a five-day assessment exercise in the Volta Region, where officials inspected boundary pillars and engaged communities living along the Ghana-Togo border.

Boundary Markers Under Spotlight

According to Major General Ntem, boundary pillars play a critical role in defining Ghana’s internationally recognised borders and preventing disputes with neighbouring countries.

He noted that protecting these markers is essential to maintaining peaceful relations with neighbouring states while ensuring the country’s territorial boundaries remain clearly defined.

The assessment exercise sought to evaluate the condition of existing boundary infrastructure and identify challenges affecting communities along the border.

Residents Asked to Stay Alert

Addressing residents of Afadzato South, the Commissioner-General urged community members to remain vigilant and promptly report any acts of vandalism, encroachment or suspicious activity involving boundary pillars.

He stressed that border communities often serve as the first line of observation and can play a crucial role in helping authorities respond to potential threats.

“If there are any issues they believe threaten the security of our boundaries, they should quickly alert us,” he said.

Focus on Peaceful Cross-Border Relations

Major General Ntem also encouraged residents to report concerns involving neighbouring communities across the border in Togo.

According to him, early reporting allows authorities to engage relevant stakeholders and resolve disputes through dialogue before they escalate.

He emphasised that maintaining peace and cooperation between border communities remains a key priority for the Commission.

Strengthening Border Security

The exercise forms part of ongoing efforts by the Ghana Boundary Commission to improve border governance and strengthen awareness among communities living near international frontiers.

Officials say effective border management requires collaboration between government institutions and local residents, particularly in areas where boundary markers are vulnerable to damage or interference.

The Commission believes that increased public awareness and community participation will help preserve Ghana’s international boundaries while supporting peace, security and regional cooperation.

The latest exercise underscores government’s commitment to protecting national territory and ensuring that border-related concerns are addressed through lawful and peaceful means.
