Police in Akwatia have taken into custody a man accused of tearing down campaign posters at a polling station during today’s by-election.
The quick response by security personnel prevented any disruption to the voting process. Authorities have cautioned that anyone caught engaging in electoral malpractices including intimidation, vandalism, or violence will face the full rigors of the law.
The by-election was triggered by the passing of the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi, creating the need to elect a new representative.
More than 50,000 voters are on the electoral roll, with the contest widely seen as a straight contest between Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Both candidates have staged vigorous campaigns in recent weeks, with top national executives and party stalwarts joining them to woo voters. To ensure order, the Ghana Police Service has deployed over 5,500 officers across the constituency, while the Electoral Commission has pledged to deliver a transparent and credible process.
The public has been urged to cast their ballots peacefully and uphold the integrity of the election.
