Elon Musk’s X is set to test a new approach using Community Notes, its crowdsourced fact-checking system, to spotlight popular posts from users with diverse perspectives. On Thursday, the Community Notes account announced a pilot program where selected contributors will rate posts by responding to questions about their likes or dislikes regarding specific content.
This system parallels how Community Notes currently functions for fact-checking. Instead of merely allowing users to upvote or downvote for accuracy—which could be manipulated by like-minded users—Community Notes employs a “bridging algorithm” designed to identify consensus among individuals with differing viewpoints.
If users with opposing opinions agree on the accuracy of a fact-check, the note gets published and shared publicly. Although X’s system has faced criticism for being too slow to address the rampant misinformation on the platform, similar methods have been adopted by Meta as an alternative to traditional fact-checking.
Now, X is exploring whether Community Notes can also help identify the most valuable posts.

Beginning today, a select group of Community Notes contributors will notice a new feature when a post gains traction through Likes. They will have the opportunity to rate and provide feedback on these posts, which will inform the algorithm about their reception among users with varied perspectives.
In a statement from the Community Notes account, the company noted that this experiment aims to highlight what resonates widely. “People often feel the world is divided, yet Community Notes shows that agreement is possible, even on contentious topics. This new feature seeks to uncover ideas and insights that bridge perspectives,” the post stated. “We’re building in public with a small pilot so that this concept can evolve based on community input. We look forward to learning and iterating with all of you, just as we do with Community Notes every day.”
