Ferrara Returns After Previous Split
Sinner and Ferrara had parted ways last year following an investigation into a positive test for the banned substance clostebol. The incident occurred after physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi used an over-the-counter spray given to him by Ferrara, which led to Sinner unintentionally ingesting the banned substance during treatment. Sinner faced a three-month suspension earlier this year, but an independent tribunal later cleared him of fault or negligence, acknowledging that the banned substance entered his system inadvertently.
Focus on Continuity and Performance
A statement from Sinner’s team explained that the decision to bring Ferrara back was made alongside his management as they prepare for upcoming tournaments. The team highlighted Ferrara’s role in Sinner’s development, noting that his return is part of ensuring continuity and maintaining high-performance standards during this critical phase of Sinner’s career.
Sinner’s Challenges and Comeback
Sinner shared in the past that the doping investigation and the resulting uncertainty had been tough for him mentally, leading to his decision to part ways with Ferrara and Naldi at the time. He mentioned that he needed “clean air” to reset and regain his focus. Despite the setback, Sinner returned to competition in May, reaching the French Open final where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz before defeating him at Wimbledon to secure the title.
Ferrara’s Experience During the Split
While away from Sinner’s team, Ferrara worked with Matteo Berrettini, another top Italian player, continuing to build his experience on the professional circuit. His return to Sinner’s corner is seen as a move to bring back familiar expertise as Sinner, at just 23, looks to continue building on his impressive run on the ATP Tour.
Looking Ahead to Cincinnati and the U.S. Open
With Ferrara back in his team, Sinner will now focus on his preparations for the Cincinnati Open and the U.S. Open, aiming to extend his strong form and maintain his position as world number one. The move is expected to strengthen Sinner’s setup as he seeks further Grand Slam success in the coming months.
