The latest build of Windows 11 in the Dev Channel features the Windows Vista boot sound instead of its intended startup chime.
If you’ve been experiencing nostalgia for 2007 while using your PC recently, you’re not alone. Microsoft has accidentally swapped Windows 11’s boot sound with the startup chime from Windows Vista in its test versions.
Users began reporting the issue shortly after Microsoft released the newest Dev Channel build of Windows 11 on Friday. The .WAV file for the boot sound, located in imageres.dll, was accidentally replaced with the Windows Vista startup sound in preview build 26200.5651.
Microsoft quickly acknowledged the error, adding a note to the release notes for the latest Dev Channel build. The Windows Insider team stated, “This week’s flight comes with a delightful blast from the past and will play the Windows Vista boot sound instead of the Windows 11 boot sound. We’re working on a fix.”
The cause of the mix-up remains unclear, but Brandon LeBlanc from the Windows Insider team humorously noted on X that he “went in and had some fun with the sound files” before confirming it was simply a bug.

It seems one of Microsoft’s engineers may have been feeling nostalgic about Windows Vista, especially during a week when the company highlighted similarities between Apple’s new Liquid Glass design and its Aero Glass look from Vista.
