Saka Fueled by PL Pain, Arsenal’s young star Bukayo Saka is turning his injury setbacks into motivation as he powers the Gunners on a historic Champions League run. While the Premier League campaign hasn’t gone to plan, especially with Manchester City falling off and Arsenal unable to capitalize due to a flurry of injuries and frustrating draws, Saka has his eyes set on redemption in Europe. After missing 12 games following a painful injury against Crystal Palace in December, he returned in April when Arsenal’s title hopes were fading fast. Despite the domestic disappointment, he’s still made an impact with six goals and 11 assists this season.
A European Comeback
Saka’s determination was on full display in the Champions League quarter-finals against Real Madrid. Arsenal stunned the footballing world with a commanding 3-0 win in the first leg and backed it up with a 2-1 triumph at the Bernabeu to secure a 5-1 aggregate victory. Saka played a key role in the second leg, overcoming the disappointment of a missed penalty by scoring a beautiful chipped goal over Thibaut Courtois. Speaking to CBS Sport after the match, Saka admitted he had this game circled during his rehab and used it as motivation to return stronger. “This was one of the games I was really preparing myself for, so it was a big motivation for me in my rehab,” he said. “I’m happy I’ve come back for this game, I’ve made my mark.”
Beating the Comeback Kings
Beating Real Madrid on their turf is no small feat, especially with their reputation for dramatic turnarounds in the Champions League. But Saka was proud of Arsenal’s focus and fight. “We saw all the stuff on social media of them saying they were going to come back,” he shared. “So we showed great mentality and felt we were really comfortable from the first minute to the last.” The win was not just a statement, but a signal that Arsenal belongs among Europe’s elite. “We know that we’re respected in Europe, but tonight is another big step and we need to keep making big steps.”
Channeling Henry’s Legacy
Saka also stirred memories of Arsenal’s famous 2006 victory at the Bernabeu, when Thierry Henry scored a memorable solo goal. After his strike, Saka mimicked the Arsenal legend’s iconic shushing celebration, although he insists it wasn’t pre-planned. “I just wanted to have my own moment!” he said. “But of course Thierry has done this here, so it’s nice we can share the same picture.”
Next Stop: Ipswich
While Europe remains the focus, Arsenal still have faint Premier League hopes. They travel to face relegation-threatened Ipswich Town on Sunday, a game they must win to keep their slim title dream alive. That match will be broadcast live and exclusive on Optus Sport.
