Samsung Electronics confirmed on Tuesday that co-CEO Han Jong-Hee passed away at the age of 63 due to cardiac arrest. A pivotal figure in Samsung’s consumer electronics and mobile sectors, Han dedicated over 37 years to the company.
He became vice chairman and CEO in 2022, overseeing Samsung’s TV, electronics, and home appliance divisions. His leadership was instrumental in maintaining the company’s status as a global technology leader, even amid challenging market conditions.
Following his death, co-CEO Jun Young-Hyun, who was recently appointed to lead Samsung’s semiconductor division, will take over as the sole CEO.
Samsung honored Han in an internal message, recognizing his significant contributions to the company’s success. He was renowned for pioneering Samsung’s LED TV technology and enhancing the company’s stature in the global market.

Han’s death occurs as Samsung faces intense competition in the semiconductor industry. The company has struggled to compete with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) in advanced chip production and has fallen behind South Korean rival Hynix in the high-bandwidth memory sector, crucial for AI-driven processors.
Just a week prior, Han addressed investors at Samsung’s annual meeting, apologizing for the company’s stock performance and warning of a challenging year ahead due to global economic uncertainties. He assured stakeholders of Samsung’s commitment to strategic mergers and acquisitions for future growth.
Han joined Samsung in 1988 after earning a degree in electrical engineering from Inha University. Before assuming his leadership role, he was vital in advancing Samsung’s display technologies.
His contributions were key in shaping Samsung into the powerhouse it is today. The company expressed heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones, honoring his lifelong dedication to innovation and excellence.
