Hosting the Independence Day celebration at the Jubilee House will save us 95% of the estimated cost of 20 million Ghana Cedis, says President John Dramani Mahama.
He explained that the GHS 20m estimate was for holding the event at Independence Square on the same scale as the previous year, hence the decision to relocate the event to Jubilee House to cut costs.
“The State spent GHC15 million on last year’s celebration in Koforidua and spent GHC13.7 million on the previous year’s celebration in Ho in the Volta region,” he said. This year, we received an estimate of at least GHC20 million for holding the event at Independence Square on the same scale as the previous years, in a year when we are calling on all to sacrifice. Today’s event will save us 95% of the estimated cost of the event,” he said during the 68th Independence Day Anniversary.
President Mahama indicated that the decision to reduce the scale of the event demonstrates “a commitment to fiscal responsibility and limited use of our resources.”
To him, the welfare of Ghanaians must be prioritized given the harsh economic situation the country is facing.
He therefore called on Ghanaians to support his government’s reforms aimed at reviving the economy and improving the welfare of Ghanaians.
The 68th Independence Day Celebration was held under the theme: Reflect, Review and Reset.
The scaled-down event took place at the Jubilee House with a limited number of dignitaries and officials
