James Oppong-Boanuh, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), met with officials from the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to discuss robbery assaults on policemen providing protection for money-carrying vehicles.
According to Citi News, the meeting was held to finalize discussions on the replacement of soft-skinned Cash-in-Transit trucks with armoured-plated vehicles.
The conference follows the latest robbery incident on a bullion truck on Monday, June 14, 2021, which resulted in the murder of a young police officer and a merchant in Accra’s Jamestown.
Citi News can also reveal that the IGP restated his prior warning to remove police escort for such vehicles if hardened armoured vans are not supplied for such services at the meeting.
Citi News has also learned that the IGP would pay a visit to the dead policeman’s family in Kasoa later today.
Mr. James Oppong-Boanuh has already directed the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to take charge of the probe.
The IGP’s decision was included in a press release published by the police on Monday and signed by Mrs. Shiella Kessie Abayie-Buckman, Director of Public Affairs.
