With the creation of its continental headquarters in Ghana, social media network Twitter has confirmed its existence in Africa.
On Monday, April 12th, 2021, the company announced the transition on its official blog, stating that it would enable the company to “be more immersed in the diverse and vibrant cultures that fuel the conversations taking place every day across the African continent.”
Twitter chose Ghana as its Africa headquarters because the nation is a champion for independence and practices free expression and online freedom, according to the company.
Another factor that influenced the move, according to the social media giant, was the location of the African Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat.
“As a democratic champion, Ghana supports free expression, media freedom, and the Open Internet, both of which Twitter supports. Furthermore, Ghana’s latest nomination to host the African Continental Free Trade Area’s Secretariat aligns with our broader aim of establishing a foothold in the field to sustain our efforts to develop and customize our service throughout Africa.”
Following the company’s CEO Jack Dorsey‘s visit to Ghana in December 2019, the company has made this announcement.
Ghanaians welcome announcement
Ghanaians have reacted positively to Twitter’s announcement.
In a post, President Nana Akufo-Addo praised Twitter’s choice of Ghana as “excellent reporting.”
“It’s fantastic news that Ghana has been chosen as the headquarters for Twitter’s Africa activities. This declaration, as well as the trust shown in Ghana, is very much appreciated by the government and Ghanaians. This is the launch of a beautiful relationship between Twitter and Ghana, which is vital for the growth of Ghana’s enormously significant tech market, as I suggested to Jack Dorsey [Twitter CEO] in our virtual meeting on April 7th, 2021,” he continued.
