In a blog post focused on “superintelligence” released earlier today, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg reiterated his belief that glasses will become the primary interface for interacting with AI in the future. During Meta’s second-quarter earnings call, he expressed to investors that individuals without AI glasses could find themselves at a significant disadvantage.
“I believe glasses will be the ideal form factor for AI,” Zuckerberg stated. “They can allow an AI to see what you see, hear what you hear, and communicate with you.” He added that integrating a display into these glasses could enhance their functionality, whether through a broader holographic view, like Meta’s upcoming Orion AR glasses, or a more compact display for everyday AI eyewear.
Zuckerberg warned, “In the future, if you don’t have AI-enabled glasses, you may experience a considerable cognitive disadvantage compared to others.”
Meta has been actively developing smart glasses, such as the Ray-Ban and Oakley Meta models, which enable users to listen to music, capture photos and videos, and ask questions of Meta AI about their surroundings. These wearables have exceeded expectations, with revenue from Ray-Ban Meta sales tripling year-over-year, according to EssilorLuxottica.
However, Zuckerberg believes there is still more potential to explore with display technology. “This is what we’ve been focusing on with Reality Labs for the past 5 to 10 years,” he noted.

Despite Reality Labs being a financial burden, with a reported operating loss of $4.53 billion in the second quarter and nearly $70 billion since 2020, Zuckerberg is eager to frame this investment as a crucial step toward the future of AI and consumer computing.
While glasses currently seem to be the most viable technology, the future of consumer AI could take various forms. For instance, OpenAI’s recent acquisition of Jony Ive’s startup aims to create new consumer devices for AI interaction. Other startups have also explored alternatives like AI pins and pendants.
Zuckerberg remains optimistic about glasses. “They are the ideal way to blend the physical and digital worlds,” he said, adding that this integration aligns with the broader vision of the Metaverse, which he believes AI will help accelerate.
