Kennedy Agyapong, MP for Assin Central, has launched a stinging attack on Dome Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo amid accusations that she is holding the government to ransom.
Mr. Agyapong remarked on GBC’s Breakfast Show on Monday, February 21, 2022, that her alleged plea to be appointed Deputy Majority Leader, a post she held in the last Parliament, smelt of a lack of ambition.
“She is saying she wants to be a deputy Majority Leader. That woman has failed in life. A whole cabinet minister [for Gender, Children and Social Protection] now demanding that she should be made a deputy Majority Leader before she comes [to Parliament].”
The Assin Central MP also urged that Ms. Adwoa Safo lose her seat as a result of her recent behavior.
“You don’t come to Parliament and you are on TikTok dancing… Dome Kwabenya is not for [your father] Apostle Kwadwo Safo.”
Other NPP members have accused the Dome Kwabenya MP of destroying the party.
Michael Kofi Okyere Baafi, a Deputy Trade and Industry Minister, claimed her continued absence in Parliament was making government work difficult.
This comes in the context of the government’s efforts to enact the controversial E-Levy bill.
The bill is under fierce resistance from the Minority, which has one less member in Parliament than the Majority.
She has, however, gained backing from the Africa Centre for Women in Politics, which has condemned what it calls “vitriolic attacks” on her.
In a statement, the organization noted that the statements made against the MP about her persistent absence from Parliament were in poor taste and an effort to bring her reputation into shame.
Dome-Kwabenya voters are divided on whether Adjoa Safo should be removed from Parliament.
Meanwhile, Adwoa Safo’s constituents are divided on whether she should be expelled from Parliament.
While 47 percent of Dome-Kwabenya locals oppose recalling Sarah Adwoa Safo, 44 percent favor such a call.
